Welcome to Class 3: Year 3 and 4

Class 3 is taught by Miss Parry and Miss Powell and is supported by highly trained teaching assistants. Mrs Firth and Premier Sports will cover PPA on Tuesday afternoons.

In class, learning is an exciting, collaborative process where children enjoy supporting each other to achieve their very best. Children become immersed in their learning through practical investigations and rich discussion. We deliver a broad and balanced curriculum where children are confident to share their learning with others and represent concepts using concrete and pictorial representations.

We love to take our learning outside the classroom and we make great use of our garden space which has a pond, vegetable patches and compost heaps.

Children are encouraged to practise their communication skills and use exciting vocabulary whilst learning. The children love reading, discussing and recommending books to one another - this love of reading shines through in their writing outcomes.

We aim to create a calm and stimulating atmosphere where all children can learn and build upon their knowledge and understanding. Children are encouraged to be independent and work as part of a team as much as possible. The children’s interests and needs are at the heart of all planned learning opportunities.

A day in Year 3 and 4 (Class 3)

The gates open for the children at 8:40am when they are able to come straight into school to complete their morning task, linked to essential number facts or previous learning.  The gate then closes around 8:50am. Children are then registered and we start our school day. In class, we start our days with spelling work and number fluency - namely times tables. In Maths, we focus on Maths Mastery, representing key concepts in concrete and pictorial ways, moving onto more abstract learning as we gain confidence. In our English teaching, using the 'Talk for Writing' approach or 'Take One Book'. Reading is a favourite time of day, where we share a variety of different text types and learn key reading skills through our acronym: VIPERS (vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising).

During the afternoons, you will see the class focusing on different curriculum subjects. Children have access to iPads and laptops to support their learning in school. We also encourage the use of technology at home. Using their curiosity, children are encouraged to ask questions and over the unit, explore their interests and develop and acquire new knowledge. Each term, we aim to invite visitors into school or take part in trips linked to their curriculum subjects – these are valuable and memorable experiences that they will never forget!
